2,582 MW of new thermal power capacity came online over the past year with 1.4 billion euros of investment

The deputy for planning and management development at Iran's Thermal Power Plants Holding Company said on Saturday 1 August 2026 (10 Mordad 1405) that a total of 2,582 MW of new thermal generation capacity has come online over the past year, with investment of 1.4 billion euros.
Thermal plants account for the bulk of Iran's electricity generation, and adding capacity to them is one of the government's main levers for reducing the power imbalance, a shortfall that in the hot months leads to consumption limits on industry and therefore to lower output at listed companies.
The announcement came alongside parliament's push against unauthorised crypto miners, which the electricity committee of the parliamentary energy commission estimates consume about 2,000 MW of national power capacity.

He said the arrangement has been running since the start of the current Iranian year, in cooperation with the secretariat of the Supreme Council of Free Zones and the relevant ministry. He added that, following enquiries with the legal department of the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Finance, the discount also covers strategic goods including cars and mobile phones. Zoghi said the zone, as the only free zone serving the capital, has been able to cut the landed cost for traders and businesses compared with mainland customs offices by using the legal tools available to it, such as tax exemptions, warehousing discounts and the reduction in commercial duty.

Aref says the government is ready to hand part of its market authority to the trade guilds
Mohammad Reza Aref, Iran's First Vice President, told managers of the Tehran Chamber of Guilds that the government is ready to hand its market powers over to the trade unions and guilds, and that much of the work, including market supervision, should be done with the guilds themselves taking part. The remarks were published on Saturday 1 August 2026. He said that if the unions recover their proper standing they can play a more effective role in dealing with violations, in regulating the market and even in setting guild taxes, which would reduce the need for broad intervention by supervisory bodies. Aref said the government is ready to form joint working groups on the guilds' problems, including tax matters, and that tax should be levied in proportion to each business's production conditions and income while tax evasion is pursued. He described the government's strategy over the past two years as securing people's livelihoods, creating relative stability in the market and taming inflation, and said the same approach will continue over the next two years. He also called for firm action against overpricing, hoarding and short weighting, with the guilds alongside the government.

Bank Melli Iran waives late payment penalties from its system outage and extends some loan maturities
Bank Melli Iran has put in place a package of measures, approved by its board, to make up for the effects of the outage in its banking systems between 23 Khordad and 23 Tir 1405 (13 June to 14 July 2026). Customers who could not pay instalments during that period will be exempt from the late payment charge, covering both interest for the period of delay and the penalty for late settlement, and will pay only the principal of the instalment, provided the overdue amount is no more than one month and no more than two instalments behind and is paid by the end of Mordad 1405 (22 August 2026). If those instalments are not paid by the end of Mordad, the late payment charge for the whole period of delay will be collected under the normal rules. Maturities on lump sum facilities have also been extended by up to one two month period. Late payment penalties on claims files for letters of credit and guarantees during the outage are covered by the waiver as well, provided customers and guarantors settle their current or non performing obligations within 30 days of the end of the outage period. The bank's public relations office announced the measures on Saturday 1 August 2026.

Iran approves the outline of an East to West corridor plan built around the Herat to Mazar-e-Sharif railway
Iran's national transit headquarters, chaired by First Vice President Mohammad Reza Aref, approved the outline of an East to West corridor document on Saturday 1 August 2026, built around the Herat to Mazar-e-Sharif railway project. The stated goals are to raise Iran's share of the international transit market, strengthen the country's geo-economic position, deepen economic ties with Afghanistan and the other countries along the route, and create new mechanisms for financing strategic projects. The same session approved measures to simplify customs procedures and through haulage of goods, an instruction on clearing returned empty containers and temporary entry, arrangements to substitute for the southern ports in supplying essential goods and in transit across shared borders with neighbours, and the architecture of a smart platform for monitoring the public transport fleet that will connect to the single window for integrated transit services. Aref described the development of transit corridors as one of the government's main priorities, and called the expansion of corridor capacity and the build out of dry and northern ports alongside the Persian Gulf ports a strategy for improving Iran's standing in regional transport.
