Bill on the Convention on the Legal Status of the Caspian Sea sent to parliament under single urgency

Esmaeil Baqaei, spokesman for Iran's foreign ministry, said on Saturday, 1 August 2026 (10 Mordad 1405), at the 72nd session of the government information bodies that the Convention on the Legal Status of the Caspian Sea has been sent to parliament for ratification. He said the convention was finalised and signed by the Caspian littoral states in 1397 (2018), and that the other four countries have ratified it, but that it can only enter into force once every littoral government has done so.
Baqaei said sending the convention to parliament and having it ratified would be an important step towards completing the legal process for the Caspian Sea, allowing more transparent and constructive engagement between Iran and the other littoral states. He said a clear legal framework would both facilitate regional cooperation and prevent openings for possible misuse by actors from outside the region.
The spokesman added that the government approved the bill under single urgency procedure and that the necessary discussions have taken place between the government and the relevant parliamentary commissions. The Caspian legal regime bears directly on energy resource development and on transit routes across Iran's north.

Three official holidays fall in the second half of Mordad 1405, on 4, 12 and 13 August 2026
Under Iran's official calendar, three midweek days in the second half of Mordad 1405 are public holidays: Tuesday 13 Mordad (4 August 2026) for Arbaeen, Wednesday 21 Mordad (12 August 2026) for the passing of the Prophet Muhammad and the martyrdom of Imam Hassan Mojtaba, and Thursday 22 Mordad (13 August 2026) for the martyrdom of Imam Reza. Friday 30 Mordad (21 August 2026) is also an official holiday, marking the martyrdom of Imam Hassan Askari and the start of the imamate of Imam Mahdi, but because it coincides with the weekend it does not change the pattern of working days. The successive breaks affect banking, commercial and logistics planning. The Tehran Stock Exchange trades Saturday to Wednesday and is closed on official holidays, so the weeks ending 13 Mordad and 22 Mordad will have fewer trading sessions. The report advises businesses to arrange contract timings, cheque due dates and administrative follow ups in advance.

US embassies in six West Asian countries warn their citizens over possible escalation
On Saturday 1 August 2026, US embassies in Egypt, Kuwait, the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Oman and Jordan warned of a possible escalation of tensions in West Asia and asked American citizens to be fully prepared to leave the region if conditions deteriorate. Iran's first vice president says any attack on the country's infrastructure is a red line
Mohammad Mokhber, Iran's first vice president, issued a statement on the social network X on Saturday 1 August 2026 in response to recent threats by US President Donald Trump, describing any attack on the country's infrastructure as a red line. In the message Mokhber wrote: "You calculate with military equations, but we answer with the logic of history. An attack on Iran's infrastructure directly awakens the fault lines on which 250 years of your hegemonic architecture has been built." The statement came at a time when the threat of strikes on Iran's energy facilities has been one of the factors moving the currency, gold and oil markets in recent days. On the same day, the free market US dollar rate in Iran stood at 193,700 tomans, up 0.68 percent from the previous day.
