CENTCOM: US Service Member Killed in Northern Iraq and Troops' Remains Located in Jordan; Ninth Night of US Strikes on Iran Completed

US Central Command (CENTCOM) said a US service member was killed in northern Iraq by a controlled detonation of unexploded ordnance from a downed Iranian drone. CENTCOM also said the remains of soldiers were located in Jordan, where a separate Iranian attack left two US soldiers dead and one missing.
CENTCOM said the US military has completed its ninth consecutive night of strikes on Iran, targeting command centres, air defence systems, missile facilities and communications networks. Explosions were heard across several parts of Iran early Monday (July 20), Donald Trump said Iran had been hit "very hard," and a fresh wave of US strikes was reported. The continuing confrontation is the main driver of the surge in oil prices and of risk across the region's markets.

The free-market dollar in Tehran extended its gains during trade on Tuesday, 21 July 2026. Having started the day at around 187,700 tomans before trading began, the dollar rose about 1.3 percent to the 190,200 toman area, a level above the roughly 189,000 tomans seen earlier in the morning. Market participants attribute the swings to a tug between two opposing signals: continued strikes and military tension in the Strait of Hormuz on one side, and reports of mediators proposing a ceasefire and talks between Tehran and Washington on the other. Gold and coin rebound in Tuesday evening trade; Emami coin nears 185 million tomans as premium shrinks
Tehran's gold and coin market reversed its morning slide on the evening of Tuesday, 21 July 2026. The Emami coin climbed about 1.6 percent back toward 185 million tomans, after retreating to around 182 million tomans earlier in the day. A gram of 18-karat gold rose about 1.5 percent to nearly 18.45 million tomans. The quarter coin edged up to around 52.8 million tomans, while the half coin traded near 94 million tomans. As gold and the dollar rose, the Emami coin's premium (the so-called bubble) narrowed markedly, easing to around 5 million tomans. The evening rebound in the domestic market was driven mainly by the higher free-market dollar rate and the swing in the global gold ounce near the 4,000 dollar area.
