Aug 1, 2026
Shares in the crypto exchange Coinbase fell more than 12 percent on Friday, 31 July 2026 (9 Mordad 1405). The drop followed second quarter results that showed weaker than expected revenue and a net loss of 359 million dollars. The stock traded around 143.77 dollars during that session, its lowest level since late June 2026.
Total revenue for the quarter came in at 1.22 billion dollars, with lower retail and institutional trading volumes cited as the main pressure on the top line. Even so, Coinbase lifted its share of global crypto trading volume to a record 10.3 percent, and the average USDC stablecoin balance held on its platforms reached 20 billion dollars, equal to 30 percent of that asset's circulating supply.
Coinbase is the largest listed crypto exchange in the United States, and its quarterly results are one of the gauges used to read trading activity across the global crypto market.

HIVE says its AI processors earn 24 times more per hour than its bitcoin mining rigs
Frank Holmes, executive chairman of the Canadian company HIVE, said the firm's AI graphics processors generate far more revenue per hour than its bitcoin mining rigs. The news was reported on Saturday 1 August 2026. According to the company's 2026 financial report, total revenue rose 158 percent to $297.8 million. Its Nvidia clusters earn about $2.90 per hour of operation, compared with $0.12 for bitcoin mining machines. Over the same period HIVE raised its hashrate 290 percent to 22.2 exahashes per second and mined 2,885 bitcoin. HIVE is building a 320 megawatt data centre in Toronto with capacity for 100,000 graphics processors, projected to generate $360 million in annual recurring revenue once fully operational in 2027. Coldcard hardware wallets hit by a $70 million exploit as the maker issues emergency updates
A firmware vulnerability in Coldcard hardware wallets led to the theft of more than $70 million in crypto assets. The incident was reported on Saturday 1 August 2026. Coinkite, the maker of Coldcard, confirmed the bug, apologised for it and released emergency updates. The company warned that updating the firmware alone is not enough, and that users who created their wallet with an affected version must generate new recovery keys and move their assets to fresh addresses. Changpeng Zhao, founder of the Binance exchange, wrote on the social network X: "Even hardware wallets can have bugs. Even old wallets with a long track record can be vulnerable. What is the solution? Perhaps splitting assets across several wallets. That carries different risks, because nothing is 100 percent." The incident has reopened debate over the limits of self custody and key management in the crypto market.

Strategy halts bitcoin purchases after an $8.22 billion net loss in the second quarter of 2026
Strategy, one of the largest corporate holders of bitcoin, reported a net loss of $8.22 billion for the second quarter of 2026. Following the report, the company's shares fell 4.56 percent to $93.28. The news was reported on Saturday 1 August 2026. Most of the loss came from an $8.32 billion non operating writedown on its bitcoin holdings under fair value accounting rules. By the end of the period Strategy held 843,775 bitcoin bought at an average price of $75,476, with a current value estimated at about $54.77 billion. Michael Saylor, the company's executive chairman, said on the earnings call that Strategy would step back from allocating all available cash to immediate bitcoin purchases and would instead keep a mix of cash and bitcoin in its reserves. Chief Executive Phong Le said no additional bitcoin would be bought while the STRC preferred stock trades below its $100 par value. The company has repurchased about $25 million of that preferred stock.

Iran's parliament moves a two-urgency bill against illegal crypto miners; estimated draw about 2,000 MW
Ahmad Moradi, head of the electricity committee of the Iranian parliament's energy commission, said on Saturday 1 August 2026 (10 Mordad 1405) that parliament has set in motion a two-urgency bill for firmer action against illegal cryptocurrency miners. The Mehr news agency carried the remarks, citing the Ministry of Energy. According to Moradi, estimates indicate that about 2,000 MW of the country's electricity capacity is consumed by unauthorised miners. Moradi, who represents Hormozgan province, said the use of subsidised electricity by some industrial units and individuals for unauthorised crypto mining is a leading source of strain on the grid and of the worsening power imbalance, and directly damages production and industry. He added that the two-urgency bill is designed to close legal gaps in tackling electricity theft by unauthorised mining rigs and to introduce deterrent penalties. He also pointed to the Ministry of Energy's "Mahtab" scheme, running in several provinces, which focuses on identifying units in industrial estates that divert part of their electricity supply to unauthorised activity in breach of their operating licences.
