Fed under inflation pressure as the chorus for a rate hike grows
Jul 20, 2026
With oil prices surging and inflation worries mounting, a growing number of Federal Reserve officials are calling for higher interest rates. Cleveland Fed President Beth Hammack said on Friday, July 17, that for the first time in her tenure businesses are asking the Fed to act to curb inflation, and estimated that core personal consumption expenditures, the Fed's preferred gauge, rose about 3.3 percent in June.
Oil's roughly 30 percent climb from its July lows, amid the US-Iran conflict, has revived concerns that inflation pressure will persist. Some interest-rate futures traders now price the odds of a hike at the September meeting in a 50 to 65 percent range, though the prevailing expectation is that rates stay on hold at the July 28 and 29 meeting. Tighter US monetary policy typically strengthens the dollar index and weighs on precious metals, which came under pressure this week, a channel whose effects reach Iran's gold and currency markets too.

European shares edge higher Tuesday as easing oil and earnings lift sentiment
European stock indexes edged higher in Tuesday trading, 21 July 2026, after a weak start to the week. The pan-European STOXX 600 rose about 0.1 percent to around 640 points. A pullback in oil prices from one-month highs, following reports of mediation efforts between the United States and Iran, helped lift sentiment, even as concern over energy-supply disruption persisted after Yemen's Houthis announced a naval blockade of Saudi Arabia. Technology was the best-performing sector, up about 0.9 percent, with semiconductor-equipment makers ASML and ASMI gaining around 2.8 and 2.1 percent respectively. Free-market dollar climbs to around 190,000 tomans on Tuesday evening amid the war-versus-talks tug
The free-market dollar in Tehran extended its gains during trade on Tuesday, 21 July 2026. Having started the day at around 187,700 tomans before trading began, the dollar rose about 1.3 percent to the 190,200 toman area, a level above the roughly 189,000 tomans seen earlier in the morning. Sahmino's live figures also put the rate near 190,400 tomans. Market participants attribute the swings to a tug between two opposing signals: continued strikes and military tension in the Strait of Hormuz on one side, and reports of mediators proposing a ceasefire and talks between Tehran and Washington on the other. Each fresh signal about escalation or de-escalation has kept the exchange rate volatile.

Gold and coin rebound in Tuesday evening trade; Emami coin nears 185 million tomans as premium shrinks
Tehran's gold and coin market reversed its morning slide on the evening of Tuesday, 21 July 2026. The Emami coin climbed about 1.6 percent back toward 185 million tomans, after retreating to around 182 million tomans earlier in the day. A gram of 18-karat gold rose about 1.5 percent to nearly 18.45 million tomans. The quarter coin edged up to around 52.8 million tomans, while the half coin traded near 94 million tomans. As gold and the dollar rose, the Emami coin's premium (the so-called bubble) narrowed markedly, easing to around 5 million tomans. The evening rebound in the domestic market was driven mainly by the higher free-market dollar rate and the swing in the global gold ounce near the 4,000 dollar area. Sahmino's live figures on its prices pages confirm the same rebound.
