Financial and derivatives turnover on Iran's commodity exchange reaches 11.3 trillion tomans

Aug 4, 2026

According to the Iran capital market news agency SENA, 1,770,000,000 contracts worth 11,300 billion tomans, or 11.3 trillion tomans, were concluded on the financial and derivatives market of the Iran Mercantile Exchange on Sunday 2 August 2026 (11 Mordad 1405).

The exchange's derivatives market covers options and futures contracts on underlying assets such as gold funds, silver bullion and saffron. These instruments let a trader hedge price risk or take a position on price direction without taking physical delivery of the commodity.

The growth in this market's value in recent months has come alongside the expansion of gold and silver commodity funds, and the exchange has increased the number of live options contracts written on those funds.

Iran's canned food syndicate head says canned fish output will fall 10 to 20 percent this year

Masoud Bakhtiari, head of Iran's canned food industry syndicate, said in remarks published on Tuesday 4 August 2026 that between 300 million and 350 million cans of fish were produced in the country last year, but output is forecast to fall by 10 to 20 percent this year. He pointed to a slump in the market and a sharp fall in household purchasing power as the main causes, saying the government's food voucher scheme only had a positive effect in its first month. War conditions and power cuts to industry have created difficult circumstances, he said, and imports of raw materials have fallen significantly from last year. Bakhtiari added that the Fisheries Organisation allowed some fishing vessels to operate during the closed season for the first time, which partly preserved the domestic fish supply. Producers are caught between rising input costs that force them to raise prices and weaker household purchasing power that turns any price increase into lower sales, he said. He called on the government to take measures to lift the sector out of recession, including increasing the value of the food voucher.

Iraq begins trial operation of a Najaf LPG depot with 3,000 cubic metres of storage

Iraq began trial operations on Monday 3 August 2026 at a liquefied petroleum gas depot in Najaf province with 3,000 cubic metres of storage capacity, with the stated aim of strengthening strategic reserves and stabilising supplies across central and other provinces. Oil Ministry Undersecretary for Gas Affairs Izzat Saber Ismail said the depot will receive LPG through pipelines rather than tanker trucks, improving safety and supporting stable deliveries to production and service facilities. The project is part of wider plans to expand Iraq's LPG storage, transport and distribution network, with technical procedures for full operation expected to be completed within days. Anmar Ali Hussein, director general of the State Company for Gas Filling and Services, said the trial was completed successfully under approved technical and operating requirements and that the company is developing additional depots across Iraq. According to Oil Ministry figures, Iraq produces about 4,500 tonnes of LPG a day against consumption of roughly 4,700 tonnes, while strategic reserves stand at around 50,000 tonnes. Nearly 95,000 vehicles across Iraq were running on LPG by July, up from more than 70,000 in March.

California diesel rises to 6.92 dollars a gallon from 5.10 dollars before the war as the world runs 8 percent short

According to AAA data reported on Monday 3 August 2026, the average price of a gallon of diesel in the United States is 5.36 dollars, while in California it is 6.92 dollars, up from 5.10 dollars before the Iran war began. The war has now entered its sixth month and petroleum product prices remain elevated. Andy Lipow of Lipow Oil Associates said the combination of the war with Iran and Ukraine's intensified attacks on Russian refining infrastructure leaves the world short about 8 percent of global diesel demand. ExxonMobil chief executive Darren Woods said on Friday 31 July that the refining challenge will be with the world for a while, and that even once the strait reopens the lost Russian capacity remains a factor. Nearly one third of US containership imports and exports move through the San Pedro Bay port complex in California, and goods are hauled by truck and rail paying that state's fuel prices before reaching shelves nationwide. JPMorgan analysts led by Natasha Kaneva wrote in a June note that a meaningful share of America's supply chain pays West Coast fuel prices, which influence freight costs, transport margins and ultimately the delivered cost of goods across the country.

CNG use in South Khorasan saved more than 12 million litres of petrol in spring 1405

Mohammadreza Abedani, head of the National Iranian Oil Products Distribution Company in the South Khorasan region, said in a report published by the oil ministry news service Shana on Monday 3 August 2026 (12 Mordad 1405) that more than 12 million cubic metres of CNG were delivered to dual fuel vehicles through the province's filling stations in the first three months of the current Iranian year. He said that level of consumption produced savings of more than 12 million litres of petrol. Abedani described wider CNG use as one of the ways to reduce dependence on petrol, and said raising the fuel's share of the consumption basket lowers petrol use, fuel costs and pollutant emissions. He also said regional specialists carry out periodic inspections of equipment performance, service quality and compliance with safety requirements at filling stations. Iran's petrol shortfall is a live issue in the country's energy economy, and CNG substitution is being pursued as one demand management tool within the national fuel basket. The figures in this report cover South Khorasan province only.
