First online electricity purchase on Iran Energy Exchange covers 37 million kilowatt hours worth 126 billion rials

Aug 3, 2026

According to Iran's Energy Ministry, the chief executive of the Tehran Province Power Distribution Company said on Monday, August 3, 2026, that the company completed the first online electricity purchase through the Iran Energy Exchange on August 1, 2026. The trade covered the monthly base-load contract for the Iranian month of Shahrivar 1405 (starting late August 2026), with a volume of more than 37 million kilowatt hours worth about 126 billion rials.

Mahmoud Mahmoudi said the average electricity purchase price paid by distribution companies in the Iranian year 1404 was 1,596 rials per kilowatt hour, and that the Tehran company, buying at 1,571 rials, ranked among the best performers on cost-efficient purchasing.

He added that the company saved 5,819 billion rials while buying 4,468 million kilowatt hours of energy in 1404, and that its rial savings on energy purchases increased sixfold compared with the previous year. Expanding electricity trading on the energy exchange is part of Iran's gradual shift toward competitive price-discovery mechanisms in the power sector.

Six Saudi tankers reroute around the Cape of Good Hope as Taiwan to Yanbu voyage stretches from 24 to 56 days

According to a report published on Monday, August 3, 2026, satellite imagery and maritime tracking data show that at least six Saudi-flagged tankers have diverted away from the Bab el-Mandeb strait and around the Cape of Good Hope in southern Africa to avoid attacks on shipping. After the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, Saudi Arabia had routed most of its oil exports through the East-West pipeline to the Red Sea port of Yanbu, which had effectively become the country's main remaining export outlet. Maritime intelligence firm Windward reported that the rerouting carries a heavy cost: the voyage from Taiwan to Yanbu has stretched from 24 days to more than 56 days, and the cost per transit has risen by between 2 and 2.5 million dollars. Maritime analytics firm Kepler said Saudi crude export flows are set to fall further in the coming weeks unless the disruption at Bab el-Mandeb ends.

Vessel transits through the Bab al-Mandab strait fell to 18 on Sunday

Data from the maritime tracking firm Kpler shows that the number of cargo vessels transiting the Bab al-Mandab strait fell to 18 on Sunday, 2 August 2026 (11 Mordad 1405). The comparable figures for the preceding Friday and Saturday were 28 and 27 vessels respectively, a drop of about 36 percent from two days earlier. The decline came alongside security reports of an attack on a ship on the route. Data from the same firm nonetheless confirms that two tankers carrying Saudi oil cargoes passed through the strait earlier in the week. Bab al-Mandab links the Red Sea to the Gulf of Aden and is one of the world's main chokepoints for seaborne trade and energy transit. Reduced traffic on the route, at the same time as disruption in the Strait of Hormuz, raises the cost and duration of shipping on the corridors around Iran and feeds through to freight rates and marine insurance.
