Pentagon to triple Patriot and quadruple THAAD interceptor production

The US Department of Defense announced a new agreement with Lockheed Martin and Northrop Grumman on Monday 3 August 2026 to expand production capacity for parts used in missile defence systems. Under the deal, output of the Patriot PAC-3 system will triple and THAAD system production will quadruple. Financial terms of the agreement were not released. The US Army awarded Lockheed Martin a contract worth more than 58 billion dollars for Patriot interceptor missiles on Wednesday 29 July, converting a one year, 4.7 billion dollar contract issued in April into a seven year agreement. Northrop Grumman said its share of the arrangement exceeds 3 billion dollars, and that investments made in 2021 have allowed it to nearly triple capacity at its Allegany Ballistics Laboratory in West Virginia and raise output at its Maryland facility by 25 percent. The agreement comes as US involvement in several conflicts, including with Iran, and continued military assistance to Ukraine have put pressure on American interceptor stockpiles. In early trading on Monday, Northrop Grumman shares rose more than 1 percent and Lockheed Martin gained 0.7 percent.
