Pentagon to triple Patriot and quadruple THAAD interceptor production

The US Department of Defense announced a new agreement with Lockheed Martin and Northrop Grumman on Monday 3 August 2026 to expand production capacity for parts used in missile defence systems. Under the deal, output of the Patriot PAC-3 system will triple and THAAD system production will quadruple. Financial terms of the agreement were not released. The US Army awarded Lockheed Martin a contract worth more than 58 billion dollars for Patriot interceptor missiles on Wednesday 29 July, converting a one year, 4.7 billion dollar contract issued in April into a seven year agreement. Northrop Grumman said its share of the arrangement exceeds 3 billion dollars, and that investments made in 2021 have allowed it to nearly triple capacity at its Allegany Ballistics Laboratory in West Virginia and raise output at its Maryland facility by 25 percent. The agreement comes as US involvement in several conflicts, including with Iran, and continued military assistance to Ukraine have put pressure on American interceptor stockpiles. In early trading on Monday, Northrop Grumman shares rose more than 1 percent and Lockheed Martin gained 0.7 percent.

SpaceX sheds more than 500 billion dollars in market value ahead of its first earnings report

SpaceX, whose shares first traded on 12 June 2026, has since lost more than 500 billion dollars in market capitalisation and now trades more than 50 percent below its intraday high. The stock has just completed its fourth consecutive weekly loss and closed at 108.37 dollars on Friday 31 July. The company's market capitalisation currently stands at about 1.4 trillion dollars. SpaceX is scheduled to publish its first earnings report as a public company after the closing bell on Tuesday 4 August. Rolling lock up restrictions on early investors also begin to expire in the coming days. Matthew Unterman, head of research at S3 Partners, said short sellers were up about 8.3 billion dollars in paper profits on the stock between the listing and Friday 31 July. New Street Research initiated coverage shortly before the offering with a price target of 165 dollars.

Big Tech stakes in OpenAI and Anthropic inflate reported S&P 500 earnings growth

According to LSEG data reported on Monday 3 August 2026, second quarter earnings growth for S&P 500 companies is running at about 48 percent year on year, but stripping out the gains booked on rising valuations of private artificial intelligence companies held by Alphabet and Amazon brings that figure down to roughly 29 percent. The analyst consensus for the quarter had been 24 percent growth. Microsoft, Amazon and Alphabet hold stakes in OpenAI, Anthropic and, in one case, SpaceX, and must record increases in the value of those holdings in their quarterly income statements. Amazon booked a 53.4 billion dollar gain in the quarter that the company said came primarily from its Anthropic investment; its earnings growth was more than 240 percent including that gain and closer to 17 percent without it. Alphabet's bottom line growth was near 300 percent including gains on SpaceX and Anthropic, and closer to 23 percent without them. Microsoft reported a 3.2 billion dollar net income gain it attributed mostly to Anthropic, plus a 480 million dollar gain on its OpenAI stake. On the same data, companies have reported earnings 7 percent above expectations this quarter, against a long term average of 4.4 percent.

Amazon's market value tops 3 trillion dollars for the first time

Amazon shares closed 4 percent higher at an all time high on Monday 3 August 2026, pushing the company's market capitalisation above the 3 trillion dollar threshold for the first time. It was Amazon's best trading day since 5 May 2026. The move extended the market's response to the company's second quarter report published last week. Revenue for the period was 200.61 billion dollars against analyst estimates of 196.47 billion dollars, and adjusted earnings per share were 1.97 dollars against expectations of 1.82 dollars. Amazon Web Services revenue reached 42.2 billion dollars, above the 40.54 billion dollars analysts had forecast. Chief executive Andy Jassy told investors on the earnings call that capital expenditure will reach 220 billion dollars this year, up from the 200 billion dollars the company projected in February. He added that even at that level the company will not have enough capacity to meet all of the demand it sees in 2026.
