Yemen's Houthis claim a drone attack on Saudi Arabia's Najran Airport

Aug 4, 2026

Yemen's Houthi group claimed on Tuesday, 4 August 2026 (13 Mordad 1405), that it carried out a drone strike on a "sensitive target" at Najran Airport in southern Saudi Arabia. The group's military spokesman, Yahya Saree, said on the social network X that the attack accurately hit its intended target.

He said the operation was a response to what he described as Saudi drone violations of Yemeni airspace over the provinces of Saada and Hajjah. Saree warned that any future violation of Yemen's airspace "will not pass without response and punishment."

Saudi authorities had made no comment on the claim at the time of the report, and it has not been independently verified. Security developments in the south of the Arabian Peninsula and along the region's shipping routes are among the factors shaping the risk premium in the global oil market, a point Chevron's chief executive also raised on Sunday, 2 August, when he pointed to risks in the Red Sea.

BP to sell its Archaea biogas business in a further retreat from green energy

BP announced on Tuesday 4 August 2026 that it will offload Archaea, its US biogas business. According to Oilprice, the decision comes just days after the company confirmed its exit from the North Sea and is part of a shift back toward core oil and gas products at the London listed major. BP had previously told investors it planned to market assets across its operating regions as part of a restructuring overseen by new chief executive Meg O'Neill. The company acquired Archaea for $4.1 billion in 2022, but the business has since faced financial underperformance and slower than expected growth, forcing BP to reassess the asset's value. The announcement came alongside BP's second quarter 2026 underlying replacement cost profit of $5.7 billion.

India to build a new 13 million barrel oil storage site after the Hormuz supply shock

India's state owned Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) will build a new storage site at Mangaluru in the state of Karnataka on the Arabian Sea, with capacity of 1.75 million tonnes, or about 13 million barrels of oil. The plan was reported by Oilprice on Tuesday 4 August 2026. Suresh Gopi, India's Minister of State for Petroleum and Natural Gas, told parliament that half of the new capacity will be reserved for strategic storage and half will support ONGC's commercial operations, and that the project will be funded by ONGC itself. Indian media had earlier put the estimated investment at $1.6 billion. India is the world's third largest crude oil importer and has been looking for alternatives to West Asian supply since the war and the disruption of flows through the Strait of Hormuz. Its existing underground strategic petroleum reserve holds 5.33 million tonnes, or 39 million barrels, equal to only eight days of national consumption.

Reuters says Syria has agreed to sharply cut Russian oil imports in sanctions talks with Washington

Reuters reported on Tuesday 4 August 2026, citing three people familiar with the matter, that Damascus has agreed to sharply reduce its oil imports from Russia as part of ongoing talks with the United States on lifting the last major sanctions against Syria. According to the report, Russian crude shipments to Syria have risen 75% this year to about 60,000 barrels a day. That is a small share of Russia's daily oil exports but makes Moscow Syria's main crude supplier. A Syrian source, a US official and a third person said senior officials in Damascus have told Washington in recent months that they are willing to make the cut, while the two sides discuss removing Syria from the US list of state sponsors of terrorism. None of the sources gave details on the timing of the shift or on alternative crude suppliers. A Syrian energy official told Reuters that Damascus is currently looking for new suppliers and that a fundamental change is expected.
