Big tech earnings season closes above expectations, with Meta lifting its 2026 capital spending ceiling to 145 billion dollars
Aug 1, 2026
The big tech earnings season, which closed in the week to 1 August 2026 (10 Mordad 1405), delivered results above analyst estimates. Microsoft posted revenue and profit ahead of forecasts on the back of growth in its Azure cloud business, and its market value rose by about 450 billion dollars in a single day. Amazon reported revenue of 200.6 billion dollars, with its cloud services arm growing revenue 37 percent; Amazon shares rose more than 15 percent in trading after the results.
Meta's quarterly revenue reached 60.8 billion dollars, up 28 percent from a year earlier, with net income of 15.8 billion dollars. The company raised its 2026 capital spending guidance to between 130 and 145 billion dollars, most of it going to data centres, graphics processors and artificial intelligence infrastructure. Apple's revenue for the quarter was 109.4 billion dollars, slightly above forecasts, but a cautious sales outlook and a weaker services performance left its stock under pressure. Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix also posted record results in memory chips.
The direction of these companies' capital spending is one of the variables shaping global demand for chips, industrial metals and data centre power.

Tehran's bourse closes Saturday down 0.4 percent at 5,054,000 units as the equal weighted index again outperforms
The Tehran Stock Exchange's main index ended trading on Saturday, 1 August 2026 (10 Mordad 1405), down 20,437 points, or 0.4 percent, at 5,054,000 units. More than 1,300 billion tomans of retail money left the equity market on the day, with another estimate putting the outflow at about 1,400 billion tomans. Trading on the first session of the week was shaped by concern over an escalation of regional military tensions, after a report that a fresh plan to strike Iran was under consideration. Even so, the gap between large and small caps persisted: the equal weighted index outperformed the main index for a fourth consecutive session, a sign that demand is still tilting toward small and mid sized listings. According to the capital market news agency, the indices of 22 industries rose on the same day. The Tehran bourse had returned to the 5 million unit channel in recent sessions, with the equal weighted index setting an all time record. Retail turnover in shares and equity funds passed 26,500 billion tomans on the day.

Haft Tappeh's 95 percent stake sale through the bourse is cancelled and the shares go to Bank Melli and Bank Saderat
Following an order by Iran's minister of economic affairs and finance and a decision of the Privatisation Board, the sale of a 95 percent stake in the Haft Tappeh Agro Industry Company through the stock exchange has been cancelled. The report was published on the evening of Saturday, 1 August 2026 (10 Mordad 1405). Under the decision, the company's shares have been transferred to Bank Melli Iran and Bank Saderat Iran. The member of parliament for Shush and Karkheh said that workers' rights had not been allowed to be overlooked before the ownership of Haft Tappeh was settled transparently and lawfully. Haft Tappeh is one of Iran's best known privatisation cases. Settling the ownership of the agro industry complex matters both for the capital market and for its workers, because the way state owned enterprises are divested through the bourse is a live question in economic policy.

Tehran Stock Exchange main index closes 0.4% lower on Saturday; equal-weight index sets a closing record
The Tehran Stock Exchange main index closed on Saturday 1 August 2026 (10 Mordad 1405) down 20,435 points, or 0.4%, easing from 5,075,000 points to 5,054,000 points. On the same day the equal-weight index rose by more than 6,694 points to 1,439,000, its highest closing level on record; its intraday peak of 1,442,000 was set in the middle of the same session. The heaviest drag on the main index came from the Shepna, Shebandar and Parsan symbols, with the drilling and refined petroleum products group posting the largest sectoral decline, while Femeli, Kegol and Tasico kept the index from falling further. During the session 439 symbols traded in positive territory against 460 in negative territory, with buy and sell queues numbering 225 and 139 respectively. The divergence between the main index and the equal-weight index indicates that larger capitalisation symbols have been more sensitive to the tense political and military backdrop.
