Araghchi travels to Doha for late Qatari emir's mourning; a condolence visit, not US talks

Iran's Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi led a delegation to Doha on the afternoon of Wednesday, July 15, 2026, to offer condolences over the death of Qatar's former emir, Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani. Sheikh Hamad, who ruled Qatar from 1995 to 2013, died on Sunday, July 12, at the age of 74. Before departing, Araghchi issued a message of sympathy to Qatar's current emir, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, and the Al Thani family, and he met senior Qatari officials in Doha.
The trip came days after Qatar said it was targeted by an Iranian attack on Sunday, and amid a fresh surge in Iran-US military tensions. Although Tehran's currency market had in recent days been watching for possible "Doha talks," the visit was a ceremonial condolence call, not a sign of direct Iran-US negotiations. An Iranian foreign ministry spokesman had earlier said Tehran has no plans for talks and is focused on defense.
