Axios Reporter: More Than 200 Mine-Like Objects Collected From Hormuz Strait's Main Shipping Lane
29 August 2026 · last month
Barak Ravid, a reporter for the American outlet Axios, wrote on X on Friday, 7 Shahrivar 1405 (August 28, 2026), that US officials told him more than 200 mine-like objects have been collected from the Strait of Hormuz's main shipping lane. Citing the same officials, he said only 11 of those objects were actual mines, and just a handful had been properly armed. The report, carried by Donya-e-Eqtesad, follows an earlier claim by CENTCOM Commander Brad Cooper that the US had fully cleared mines from the Strait of Hormuz, a claim Iran's deputy foreign minister for legal and international affairs, Kazem Gharibabadi, had previously rejected, saying only Iran knows the exact location of the mines in the strait.
The new figures are the first specific breakdown reported of how many of the suspicious objects collected from the Strait of Hormuz were actual mines, a detail relevant to assessing the risk of continued shipping through the strategic waterway.
