Chip Stocks Stayed Under Pressure Despite Strong TSMC Results as Wall Street Traded Mixed on Thursday
16 July 2026 | 3 months ago
The main US stock indexes traded mixed and without a single direction on Thursday, July 16, 2026. In early trading, the Nasdaq lagged with a fall of about 0.8% and the S&P 500 with a decline of about 0.4%, while the Dow Jones was slightly higher.
The main pressure was on semiconductor stocks, which fell despite strong results from TSMC as investors grew concerned about high valuations in the technology sector. A weaker-than-expected June retail sales report and the ongoing US-Iran war also weighed on market sentiment.
On the other side, Abbott shares rose about 4% after it raised its earnings outlook, while United Airlines fell about 3% following its warning about rising fuel costs. The figures cited refer to early Thursday trading and may change by the close.
