Hebrew media: Netanyahu and Katz hold emergency meeting to weigh response to Hezbollah ceasefire violation

Hebrew-language media reported on Wednesday, 5 August 2026 (14 Mordad 1405), that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Yisrael Katz held an emergency meeting to weigh a response to a serious incident in southern Lebanon. Israel's public broadcaster, citing a source, said the meeting would discuss a possible operation against Hezbollah requiring approval from senior political leadership.
Israel's Channel 12 and the newspaper Yedioth Ahronoth separately reported that the Israeli military has asked the political leadership to approve a broader strike against Hezbollah in southern Lebanon, but that approval has not yet been granted. TheYeshivaWorld, citing i24 News, reported that the Israeli military is pressing for a forceful response to what it describes as a serious Hezbollah ceasefire violation.
The developments come as a new round of Lebanon-Israel talks is scheduled to resume on Thursday. The risk of renewed escalation in southern Lebanon is one of the background factors that, alongside the status of the Strait of Hormuz, is feeding safe-haven demand in the global gold market.
