19 August 2026 | 2 months ago
International Atomic Energy Agency Director General Rafael Grossi said on Wednesday, August 19, 2026 (28 Mordad 1405), according to Ecoiran citing Hamshahri Online, that agency inspectors have begun extensive excavation and survey work at Syria's Deir ez-Zor site, which he said had been linked to the former Syrian government's clandestine nuclear program. Grossi said he and his team had visited the site in person.
The IAEA chief also said the agency had discovered another site in Syria containing nuclear material, but gave no further detail on its exact location or the nature of the material found. The remarks come as the agency continues inspecting the nuclear legacy of Syria's former government, a process that could affect regional diplomacy and the international sanctions track.
