Iran's Foreign Ministry Calls a Potential US Attack on Civilian Infrastructure a War Crime
12 August 2026 | 2 months ago
Esmaeil Baghaei, spokesman for Iran's Foreign Ministry, wrote on X on Wednesday, August 12, 2026, the anniversary of the 1949 Geneva Conventions, that repeated US threats to strike bridges, power plants and other civilian infrastructure in Iran violate the laws of war principles of distinction between military and civilian targets and proportionality, and amount to a war crime.
Baghaei said the international community, the states party to the Geneva Conventions, and Switzerland as the conventions' depositary cannot remain indifferent to such violations. The remarks come as the US and Israel's war with Iran continues, with media reports pointing to growing concern in Washington over the conflict's potential expansion.
