According to Al Jazeera, citing reports by The Washington Post and AFP on September 16, 2026 (Shahrivar 25, 1405), the Trump administration is preparing a 2.8 billion dollar sale to Israel of 40,000 bombs, including 20,000 MK-84 general-purpose bombs and 20,000 BLU-117 (a thermally coated variant for safer naval storage) 907 kg (2,000 pound) bombs, plus I-2000 Penetrator warheads for hardened underground targets, the largest single sale of the munition in recent years. The package, funded through the US Foreign Military Financing mechanism, has been informally notified to congressional committees, the Post reported, while the State Department said it does not comment on proposed sales before formal notification to Congress. US Senator Chris Van Hollen said he would work to block the sale.
