US crude imports from Iraq stayed at zero for a fifth consecutive week, EIA data show
Aug 2, 2026
According to data released by the US Energy Information Administration and reported on Sunday 2 August 2026 (11 Mordad 1405), the United States imported no crude oil from Iraq for the fifth consecutive week. The same data showed no crude imports from Saudi Arabia during the reporting period either.
Canada remained the largest foreign supplier of crude to the United States that week, exporting 3.62 million barrels per day, followed by Venezuela at 673,000 bpd, Brazil at 269,000 bpd and Ecuador at 230,000 bpd. Iraq last exported crude to the United States during the week ending 19 June 2026, when shipments averaged 71,000 bpd.
Iraq lost an estimated 302.8 million barrels of oil production during the first half of 2026 as the US and Iran war disrupted extraction and exports through the Strait of Hormuz. As OPEC's second largest producer, Iraq relies on crude sales for about 90 percent of state revenue, leaving it highly exposed to disruption in the Strait, which carries roughly one fifth of global oil supplies.

A heatwave pushed European power prices to winter levels, with German power reaching 210 euros a megawatt hour on 23 June
An intense heatwave across Europe this summer has pushed electricity prices to levels normally seen in the cold winter months at the peak of heating demand. According to London Stock Exchange Group data reported on Sunday 2 August 2026 (11 Mordad 1405), the day ahead power price in Germany reached 210 euros per megawatt hour on 23 June 2026, while power contract prices in France and the United Kingdom rose to their highest levels since January 2025. The pressure has come from two directions. On the supply side, according to data from Kpler, when temperatures passed 40 degrees Celsius in parts of France, the country's nuclear output fell by more than 9 gigawatts over several days and 12 of its 57 reactors were affected, because the reactors rely on river water for cooling. According to the think tank Ember, nuclear plants supply about 23 percent and gas plants about 17 percent of the European Union's electricity; Rystad Energy reports that a typical gas plant can lose roughly 7 to 12 percent of its output at 30 degrees Celsius. The channel to Iran's market is the gas price: according to Bourse News, gas prices have approached their highest levels since the start of the Russia and Ukraine war in 2022 because of disruption to energy transit from West Asia following the US attack on Iran, and that has raised the cost of generating electricity in Europe.

Saffron certificate and fund trading on the Iran Mercantile Exchange reached 448 billion toman in a week
According to the Iran Mercantile Exchange's weekly report, total trading in the commodity deposit certificate market and saffron based investment funds reached 448 billion toman in the week ending 9 Mordad 1405 (31 July 2026). The figure was published in a report on Sunday 2 August 2026 (11 Mordad 1405). A commodity deposit certificate is an instrument whose holder owns a specified quantity of a commodity deposited in a warehouse approved by the exchange, and which can be bought and sold on the market like a security. Saffron, alongside gold and silver, is among the assets for which both deposit certificates and commodity investment funds have been established in Iran's capital market. These instruments allow investment in saffron without the need to buy and store the physical crop, and their trading turnover is one of the gauges of investment demand for this agricultural product.

In the week to 9 Mordad 1405 (31 July 2026), the physical market of the Iran Mercantile Exchange traded 3,670,001 tonnes of goods worth 97.8 trillion toman. According to the Iran Capital Market News Agency (SENA), that volume was up 24.4 percent, or 721,000 tonnes, on the previous week. By composition, base metals and the steel chain took the bulk of turnover, with copper, rebar and bloom billet topping the weekly value table. By volume, cement, iron ore pellet and iron ore concentrate led the trading, and pellet returned to the list of most traded products after several weeks away. The value traded by the exchange's top ten companies in the same week exceeded 39.9 trillion toman, about 41 percent of the total physical market turnover. The concentration in the steel chain and building materials indicates that demand from Iran's basic industries has held up despite energy restrictions and wartime conditions.
