Crypto from Scratch: What Bitcoin Is, What Tether Is, and Why Tether Became Iran's Digital Dollar
Learn from scratch what a blockchain is, how Bitcoin is a scarce but highly volatile asset, and why Tether, which is pegged to the dollar, has taken on the role of a "digital dollar" in Iran, with a labelled hypothetical example, a few dated real figures, and a list of the base risks.

Let's learn from scratch, and very simply, what crypto, Bitcoin, and Tether actually mean. In this lesson we put three things together: the blockchain, Bitcoin, and Tether, explained simply. Why does this matter? Because in Iran, Tether plays effectively the same role that the dollar plays. A blockchain is a shared ledger that is kept, not by one single bank, but on thousands of computers. Each transaction is written into a block, and that block is then firmly chained to the one before it. Because copies of this ledger sit on thousands of computers, tampering with it is almost impossible. Bitcoin is the first cryptocurrency, and its code locks the supply at no more than twenty-one million. Per Sahmino data, one bitcoin was priced at about sixty-two thousand dollars on the fourteenth of July. But Bitcoin's price is very volatile and it can swing sharply up or down within a very short time. Tether is the exact opposite; a stablecoin pegged to the dollar so that it avoids those wild swings. That same day, one Tether traded near one hundred eighty-three thousand tomans, very close to one dollar. Imagine you convert ten million tomans into Tether; your holding's value then stays locked to the dollar. In Iran, because getting dollars is hard, Tether has become an accessible digital dollar for many people. But we should remember that using crypto for domestic payments inside Iran carries legal restrictions. Keep in mind that Tether is steady, but it is not risk-free; backing and issuer risk are always present. In short: the blockchain is the rail, Bitcoin is the volatile one, and Tether is that steady digital dollar. If this lesson helped you, save it and take a moment to review it one more time a little later.
