A share represents an ownership claim in a company whose assets, liabilities and profit are reported for stated periods. The ticker identifies the listed instrument, while the registered company name identifies the issuer whose filings you need to inspect. Keep the two distinct, especially after renaming. The board shows trades and orders, while a filed statement describes the business. An index aggregates a defined set of instruments using a specified method. Trading calendars, price bands, halts and settlement rules can change; read the exchange notice for the instrument and date instead of memorising a permanent timetable.

Worked example (hypothetical)

A company has 10 million shares and each trades at 2,000 rial. Its quoted market capitalisation is 20 billion rial. That is neither today’s turnover nor the cash held by the company.

Check your understanding

Find the ticker, issuer, timestamp and closing price separately on a board. Which document can verify the issuer’s profit? Its dated filed statement, not the price chart.
