Lesson 54

When the Ounce Falls but the Coin Rises

A coin’s price can be decomposed into fine-gold value and a local premium. Fine-gold value changes with the global ounce quotation and the selected local FX rate; premium changes with local supply, demand and product conditions.

A coin’s price can be decomposed into fine-gold value and a local premium. Fine-gold value changes with the global ounce quotation and the selected local FX rate; premium changes with local supply, demand and product conditions. Define premium consistently: percentage above metal value differs from metal value as a share of price. A global gold decline therefore need not make a local coin cheaper. Use compatible dates, documented weight and purity, and avoid treating a premium estimate as a guaranteed price correction.

Worked example (hypothetical)

Initial metal value is 100 and a 20% premium makes price 120. Gold falls 5%, FX rises 10%, and premium becomes 30%: new price is 100 × 0.95 × 1.10 × 1.30 = 135.85, about 13.2% above 120.

Check your understanding

Can the change be explained by adding three percentages? No. Relative changes compound; first define each component and its denominator.
