Alberta Premier Rejects Using Oil as Leverage Against Trump
28 August 2026 · last month
Alberta Premier Danielle Smith on Thursday, 5 Shahrivar 1405 (August 27, 2026), rejected the idea of imposing export taxes on the Canadian province's crude oil exports to the United States in retaliation for the Trump administration's tariffs. According to Oilprice.com, citing Global News, she called the move potentially the most disastrous policy decision for Canada's economy.
Smith said such a step could trigger a disproportionate US tariff response and warned Washington could in turn cut off gasoline and diesel exports to Ontario and Quebec. Alberta exports about 4 million barrels of crude oil a day to the United States, worth roughly $80 billion last year.
