The Australian Bureau of Statistics reported on Friday 31 July 2026 that the country's producer price index rose 3.6% year on year in the second quarter of 2026. That follows a 3.0% increase in the first quarter and is the highest rate of Australian producer price inflation since the first quarter of 2025. The market had expected 2.5%.
On a quarterly basis, producer prices rose 1.3% in the second quarter, after 0.4% in the first quarter and against a market forecast of 0.3%.
Australia is one of the world's largest exporters of iron ore, coal and liquefied natural gas, and rising production costs there are one of the channels through which this year's energy shock is passing into the raw materials supply chain.
