Borsa Istanbul fell 1.36 percent as banks led losses and refiner Tupras was the one big gainer

Borsa Istanbul's benchmark BIST 100 index fell 186 points, or 1.36 percent, to 13,501 on Wednesday, 29 July 2026. According to Trading Economics data, the index is down 4.39 percent over the past month, though it remains 27.15 percent above its level a year ago. The BIST 100's record high of 15,204 points was set in May 2026, meaning the index now trades about 11 percent below that level.
Among the large caps, banking shares bore the heaviest pressure: Is Bankasi fell 4.06 percent and Vakifbank 3.26 percent, while Garanti Bankasi slipped 0.86 percent. Turkish Airlines lost 1.8 percent and Enka Insaat 1.35 percent.
By contrast Tupras, Turkey's largest refiner, rose 1.45 percent to 297.75 lira, and is up 80.45 percent over the past year. The refiner's divergent performance on a broadly negative day reflects wider refining margins following the jump in global crude prices. Turkey is one of Iran's significant trading partners and transit routes, so swings in its market matter to those active in trade between the two countries.
