Canada's Foreign Ministry said in an official statement on Friday, August 14, 2026 (23 Mordad 1405), that under the country's Special Economic Measures Act it has imposed new sanctions on five Iranian individuals, including officials linked to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. According to Khabaronline, citing the official website of the Government of Canada and IRNA, the ministry cited threats to a critical international waterway and violations of navigation rights in and around the Strait of Hormuz as the reason for the sanctions.
Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand said in the statement that freedom of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz is essential for global trade and energy security, and called on Tehran to reduce tensions and respect international navigation rights. Canada's Foreign Ministry said the move is aligned with efforts by its allies, and that Canada is prepared to support efforts to stabilize the situation in the strait if conditions allow. Iranian officials have repeatedly said that control over transit through the Strait of Hormuz rests with Iran.
