Qatar Denies Detaining Iranian Pilots; Tehran Asks Red Cross to Press the Case
15 August 2026 | 2 months ago
Majed al-Ansari, spokesperson for Qatar's foreign ministry, categorically denied reports of detaining Iranian pilots in remarks carried by Al Jazeera on Saturday, August 15, 2026 (24 Mordad 1405). He said that after two Iranian fighter jets violated Qatari airspace, Qatari forces took the necessary steps to defend the country's territory, and that Doha's teams contacted Tehran to arrange the handover of one pilot's body but have not received a response.
The statement followed a letter from Brigadier General Seyed Mohammad Baqerzadeh, commander of the Armed Forces General Staff's missing persons search committee, to the International Committee of the Red Cross, urging an urgent follow up on the status of three Iranian pilots reported as captured in Qatar. According to the letter, two Su-24 jets were hit by air defenses while returning from a mission on March 2, 2026 (11 Esfand 1404), forcing the pilots to eject.
The exchange comes against the backdrop of regional tension around the Strait of Hormuz and Persian Gulf security, which in recent weeks has included attacks on oil tankers and a complete halt in ship traffic through the strait.
