CENTCOM Says It Disabled a Cargo Ship in the Gulf of Oman; IRGC Claims It Struck an LPG Carrier in the Strait of Hormuz

11 October 2026 | 9 days ago

US Central Command (CENTCOM) said in a statement that on Saturday 10 October 2026 (18 Mehr 1405) a US fighter jet struck the stern of the Panama-flagged cargo ship M/V Ocean Molica (also known as the Arika Sun) with a precision munition in the Gulf of Oman, fully disabling its propulsion without harming the crew. CENTCOM said the crew ignored repeated warnings and tried to run the naval blockade of Iran after leaving an Iranian port. It says that since resuming the blockade on 14 July it has disabled four commercial vessels, turned around about 135 ships and destroyed 10 tankers linked to the IRGC's network.

On the other side, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps said, in a statement carried by Iranian official media, that it struck a large LPG carrier named NV Sunshine that was trying to transit by an "illegal route" south of the Strait of Hormuz. The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) agency said an outbound tanker in the strait was hit on its port side by an unknown projectile on Sunday 11 October 2026 (19 Mehr 1405) and caught fire; the crew are reported safe and the damage is not yet known. According to ISNA, the same agency also said on Saturday night that it had received reports of ships near Ras al-Khaimah in the UAE being ordered by radio to leave their berths.

About a fifth of the world's oil and liquefied natural gas passed through the Strait of Hormuz before the war, so continued attacks on shipping feed into freight costs and oil-price risk. The claims of both sides are reported from their own statements and have not been independently confirmed.
