Colombia's foreign ministry said in a statement that the country formally severed diplomatic relations with Iran as of September 19, 2026. According to Khabar Online, citing Sky News, Bogota attributed the decision to "Western Hemisphere national security" considerations but said consular relations between the two countries remain in place. Colombia's government, without presenting evidence, accused Iran of links to groups involved in drug trafficking and criticised disruption to shipping in the Strait of Hormuz. The decision was taken by the government of Abelardo de la Espriella, who succeeded Gustavo Petro on August 7 and is redrawing Colombia's foreign policy. Trade between the two countries is small, and the direct effect on Iran's markets is seen as limited.
