Energy Commission MP: Gas Delivery to Some Power Plants May Face Problems This Winter

Seyed Esmail Hosseini, the parliamentary representative for Shiraz and Zarghan and a member of the Energy Commission, told reporters in Shiraz on Thursday, September 17, 2026 (Shahrivar 26, 1405), as relayed by ISNA and reported by Khabaronline, that Iran's power generation capacity now stands near 100,000 megawatts, but in winter, as household and commercial gas use rises sharply, gas delivery to thermal power plants drops, forcing plants to substitute part of their fuel with gasoil and fuel oil. He said the assessment reflects normal conditions and that Iran would face this energy imbalance even without the war, but the war has additionally damaged parts of the country's gas, oil and power production infrastructure, along with several thousand points on the power transmission and distribution grid. Hosseini said that despite this damage, the blackouts imposed over the summer were the same planned two-hour outages that would have occurred anyway because of the energy imbalance, and that the public has not experienced blackouts directly attributable to the war.
