Gharibabadi: a proposal has been made to negotiate a temporary route in the Strait of Hormuz with Oman

28 July 2026 | 3 months ago

Kazem Gharibabadi, deputy foreign minister for legal and international affairs, gave new details on Tuesday, 28 July 2026 (6 Mordad 1405) about the talks over the Strait of Hormuz. He said a proposal has been made for Iran and Oman to negotiate a temporary route through the waterway which, if an understanding is reached, would replace the current northern and southern routes through the strait.

In the same remarks he described earning revenue from the Strait of Hormuz, alongside the exercise of sovereignty, as Iran's objective, and said that anyone who believes they can earn more than 50 billion dollars from the waterway would be handed the job, with half the revenue for themselves and half for Iran. Gharibabadi had previously said Iran did not agree to a plan for vessels to transit via the southern route of the strait.

The remarks came on the same day that Reuters reported Oman had proposed a joint regional mechanism funded by voluntary contributions to manage the Strait of Hormuz. The Strait of Hormuz carries a large share of the region's oil and cargo, and its status has been one of the main variables behind world oil prices and the exchange rate in Iran's market in recent weeks.
