Gharibabadi says Strait of Hormuz will not return to pre-war arrangements, with contacts running only through Oman

Eghtesad Online reported on Tuesday 28 July 2026 that Kazem Gharibabadi, deputy foreign minister for legal and international affairs, said the Strait of Hormuz will not return to its pre-war arrangements and that this is the "definitive policy of the system".
He also said there is currently no plan for direct negotiations with the United States, and that contacts are being pursued only through Oman. Gharibabadi added that examining withdrawal from the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty should no longer be treated as a taboo subject.
The Strait of Hormuz is the main export route for Persian Gulf oil, and any change in its legal and security status feeds directly into the risk premium in global oil prices, marine insurance rates and expectations in Iran's domestic currency market. According to earlier reports from the same outlet, a proposal has been raised to negotiate a "temporary corridor" through the strait with Oman.
