Saudi defence ministry says it intercepted drones targeting oil facilities in the Eastern Province
29 July 2026 | 3 months ago
Eghtesad Online reported late on Tuesday 28 July 2026 that Saudi Arabia's defence ministry said it had intercepted and destroyed several drones that were attempting to strike oil facilities in the kingdom's Eastern Province.
The Eastern Province is the heart of Saudi Arabia's oil industry and hosts Aramco's largest processing and crude export facilities. Threats against that infrastructure are typically reflected in the global oil market as a higher risk premium.
The announcement came as Yemen said it had struck a Saudi tanker in the Red Sea. Together these developments keep the Persian Gulf and Red Sea energy export corridors in traders' focus, routes whose disruption feeds through to global oil prices and therefore to the foreign currency earnings of exporting countries in the region, Iran included.
