Government spokeswoman says Iran's gas production capacity has fallen by about 230 million cubic metres

Government spokeswoman Fatemeh Mohajerani said at a press conference on Tuesday, 28 July 2026, that damage to some facilities has cut Iran's gas production capacity by about 230 million cubic metres, a shortfall she said has reduced feedstock to refineries and power plants and made energy demand management a necessity.
She added that the country produces roughly 100 million litres of petrol a day and the government is committed to maintaining that level of output, but that importing petrol requires the allocation of substantial foreign currency resources. According to Mohajerani, the cost of moving each litre of petrol to the pump, together with station operators' services, runs between 3,000 and 4,000 toman, while part of the fuel is sold at the subsidised rate of 1,500 toman.
The spokeswoman stressed that no final decision has yet been taken on raising the free market petrol price, and that no change to the subsidised petrol price is on the agenda under current conditions.
