Head of Iran's agricultural guilds chamber warns 6-hour well outages and 100-fold power bills threaten 30 percent of farm output

The head of Iran's agricultural guilds chamber said on Monday 27 July 2026 that electricity to agricultural water wells is being cut for six hours a day and that the sector's power costs have risen 100-fold. He warned that if the situation persists it could hit farm output and the country's food security by up to 30 percent.
Mehr News Agency reported the same official on the same day saying outages at agricultural water wells run between six and eight hours a day, and that energy saving in agriculture threatens national food security.
The warning comes in a week when grid constraints in several provinces have also forced shorter working hours at government offices. Agricultural wells depend on electricity for irrigation at the peak of summer heat, and prolonged outages in this season feed directly into crop yields, which can pass through to food prices and import needs in the months ahead.
