Houthis renew missile and drone attacks on Yemen's al-Makha port, killing at least 11

10 August 2026 | 2 months ago

Yemeni government-aligned forces said on Sunday, August 9, 2026 (18 Mordad 1405), that the Houthis launched a new wave of missile and drone attacks on the port of al-Makha (Mocha) on Yemen's western coast, less than 24 hours after an earlier barrage struck the same port. According to AFP, cited by Al Jazeera, Sunday's initial attacks killed at least 11 people, including eight military personnel and three civilians, and wounded 32 others, while damaging port facilities and commercial goods.

Government forces said that during a second wave later on Sunday, they intercepted and destroyed six drones, and that two ballistic missiles fell into the sea without hitting their targets. Houthi military spokesman Yahya Saree told Reuters the operation targeted Saudi troop concentrations and weapons depots in the area. The attacks extended to the al-Khokha district south of Hodeidah, where, according to al-Jumhuriya television, the government-appointed governor of Hodeidah survived a missile strike on his residence. The escalation on Yemen's western coast adds to the security risk facing shipping in the Red Sea near the Bab al-Mandab Strait.
