Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei said on Tuesday, 21 Mehr 1405 (13 October 2026), that Tehran and Muscat have kept up consultations over recent months on setting safe routes for commercial shipping, and that the two countries have reached an understanding on a "safe and secure temporary route" between them. He said some implementation details are still being pursued.

The remarks were reported by Donya-e-Eqtesad. The spokesman gave no detail on the exact route, the start date or the conditions for ship passage, so it is not yet clear what share of commercial traffic the arrangement would cover.

Shipping through the Strait of Hormuz has been seriously disrupted since the war began, and the IMF's outlook published today (13 October 2026) cites the prolonged disruption there as one reason for its downgrade of regional growth. Brent traded around 105 dollars a barrel the same day.
