Iran nuclear verification has been stalled for over a year as four Western powers push UN Security Council referral

IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi told the agency's Board of Governors on Monday, September 7, 2026 (16 Shahrivar 1405), that Iran provided no information during the latest reporting period on the status of its declared nuclear material or facilities, and that inspectors have been unable to conduct on site verification. According to Al Jazeera, in a report published Tuesday, September 8 (17 Shahrivar), Grossi said the agency has lost continuity of knowledge for more than a year over stocks of uranium enriched to as much as 60 percent at facilities hit in US and Israeli attacks in June 2025, calling it a proliferation concern needing urgent correction.
Citing Reuters, France, Germany, the UK and the United States are seeking support for a draft resolution at the 35 member Board of Governors that would send Iran's file back to the UN Security Council for the first time in two decades. Iran's Foreign Ministry spokesman, Esmaeil Baghaei, said at the same day's press briefing that the restrictions facing inspectors were a consequence of the US and Israeli attacks, and warned Iran would take necessary measures if the resolution is pursued. The draft has not yet been formally submitted to the board, and negotiations over its wording continue.
