Seyed Mohammad Atabak, Iran's Minister of Industry, Mine and Trade, said in a television interview on Wednesday 29 July 2026 (7 Mordad 1405) that import permits have been issued for about 75,000 vehicles. He said permits have also been issued for the import of certain special vehicles, with the aim of generating government revenue from those imports, though the ministry's policy is to focus on importing mainly economy vehicles.
Atabak said the policy of the government and the ministry is to make the car market competitive, and that improving the quality of domestically produced vehicles is a legitimate demand from customers. He announced the formation of a committee to monitor vehicle quality and safety, covering every stage of production from the manufacture and supply of spare parts through to assembly, so that product quality is continuously monitored.
The minister added that the necessary safety requirements and infrastructure have been prepared and made available to the private sector, and that a crash test facility has been established so that all domestically produced vehicles are assessed and checked against safety and performance standards.
