Iran's Social Security Organisation says the authority for identifying drivers eligible for premium support has changed

3 August 2026 | 3 months ago

Iran's Social Security Organisation has said that under note 2 of the executive regulations for clause "kh" of article 28 of the Seventh Development Plan law, it is no longer the body that determines whether drivers eligible for the government's share of insurance premiums are active or inactive. Zahra Karimian, the organisation's director general for registration and individual accounts, said on Monday, 3 August 2026 (12 Mordad 1405), that intra-city drivers are now assessed by the Municipalities and Village Administrations Organisation and inter-city drivers by the Road Maintenance and Transportation Organisation, which then refer qualifying individuals to the Social Security Organisation.

She said about 255,000 intra-city drivers and 460,000 inter-city drivers are currently covered by Social Security insurance. The quota ceiling is unchanged, and a new person can only be added when a driver leaves the list; the government contribution is calculated on the basis of the daily minimum wage.

The organisation has proposed an amendment to the drivers' law to parliament, and the bill is under review. Under the proposal, the government's contribution would be funded through freight waybills or passenger fares so that the number of people covered can be increased.
