Israeli defence minister says a strike plan on Iran's energy infrastructure is ready but the US has not backed it

Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz said on Tuesday 28 July 2026 that Israel is planning to strike Iran's energy infrastructure, but that the United States has not yet supported the plan.
According to Katz, Washington believes such an attack could prompt Tehran to launch retaliatory strikes against targets across the region. He said: "The United States is concerned that Iran's response could further escalate tensions in the region and ultimately trigger a global oil crisis."
The remarks came as Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu visited Washington. Iran's energy infrastructure includes its refineries and oil export terminals, and any change in their status bears directly on global oil supply and on Iran's foreign currency earnings.
