Japan's Nikkei ends the week down 6.4 percent as chip selloff and war weigh on Asian stocks
19 July 2026 | 3 months ago
Japan's Nikkei 225 fell 5.8 percent to 62,946 on Friday, July 17, 2026, ending the week down 6.4 percent. A selloff in chipmakers and AI-related shares, alongside worries over the US-Iran war and surging oil prices, weighed on the market.
Taiwanese shares also dropped more than 5 percent, and MSCI's broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan slid more than 2 percent. India held up better: Mumbai's Sensex traded up about 0.6 percent and the Nifty about 0.5 percent on Friday.
The Hormuz-driven oil surge and inflation worries have sharpened risk aversion across Asian markets.
