Joint Maritime Information Center Raises Strait of Hormuz Threat Level to "Severe"
11 July 2026 | 3 months ago
The Joint Maritime Information Center (JMIC) raised the Strait of Hormuz threat level from "substantial" to "severe" in an advisory dated July 7, 2026 (16 Tir 1405), stating that an attack on commercial vessels is now "highly likely." The assessment followed a single day in which three commercial tankers were attacked near the strait. The upgraded warning has pushed war-risk insurance costs higher and made international shipping lines more cautious about transiting the key energy waterway.
