British maritime security firm Ambrey said on Wednesday 29 July 2026, in an initial assessment, that a drone hit the floating gas storage tanker Energos Winter at Egypt's Mediterranean port of Damietta, causing a fire that spread to another vessel, the Gaslog Salem. Three trading sources familiar with the incident gave the same account, and two separate security sources assessed the likely cause of the blast as a drone strike. British maritime risk management group Vanguard said the vessel was struck by an unidentified projectile on its starboard side.
Egypt's petroleum ministry confirmed in a statement that a fire broke out on a gasification vessel and a storage vessel at Damietta port, but made no mention of a drone attack and gave no cause for the incident. No party has claimed responsibility.
The Energos Winter is a floating storage and regasification unit (FSRU) with a storage capacity of 138,250 cubic metres, owned by US-based Energos Infrastructure. Reuters verified the location and date of video posted on social media against satellite imagery and ship-tracking data.
