US issues a new round of Iran-related sanctions targeting insurers and eight more tankers

The US Treasury Department announced a fresh round of Iran-related sanctions on Wednesday 29 July 2026, designating 10 entities and eight more tankers. Six of the entities on the list are based in China, the department said.
The Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) designated two firms, Arabian Gulf Marine Insurance Co and HormuzSafe Marine Services Authority, saying they were integral to a scheme that extracted digital assets and other revenue from ships transiting the Strait of Hormuz through various insurance policies. Treasury framed the move as targeting what it called Iran's efforts to "monetize the Strait of Hormuz".
According to Reuters, OFAC has sanctioned more than 100 vessels linked to Iran's shadow fleet since the start of 2026. The designations were announced on the same day that the United States and Saudi Arabia struck Iran-backed groups in Iraq.
