Microsoft shares rose 8 percent in extended trading on Wednesday, 29 July 2026 (7 Mordad 1405). The company reported fiscal fourth-quarter revenue of $90.01 billion for the quarter ended 30 June, above the $87.62 billion expected by LSEG consensus and up about 18 percent year on year. Adjusted earnings per share came in at $4.74 against the $4.24 expected.
Net income for the quarter was $35.77 billion, or $4.81 per share, up from $27.23 billion, or $3.65 per share, in the same quarter a year earlier. Microsoft attributed part of the gain to a $3.2 billion benefit from its investment in the artificial intelligence lab Anthropic and to lower-than-expected costs tied to its voluntary retirement programme, while its Xbox gaming business took an impairment charge.
Capital expenditures and finance leases for the quarter rose 69 percent to $41 billion. Chief financial officer Amy Hood reiterated the company's 2026 capital spending plans and said the useful life of office and data centre buildings would be extended to 25 years from 15. As of Wednesday's close, Microsoft shares were down about 19 percent so far in 2026, while the S&P 500 index had gained about 7 percent over the same period.
