Only five tankers crossed the Strait of Hormuz on Tuesday, traffic still a fraction of the pre war 130 to 140 vessels a day

5 August 2026 | 3 months ago

Five tankers passed through the Strait of Hormuz on Tuesday, three entering the waterway and two exiting, Reuters reported citing Kpler data in a story published on Wednesday 5 August 2026 (14 Mordad 1405). The figure shows traffic through the chokepoint remains severely constrained despite numerous reports of peace efforts in progress.

According to Reuters data, before the US and Israeli strikes on Iran on 28 February the strait's average daily throughput was between 130 and 140 vessels, including tankers and other ships. One of the vessels that exited on Tuesday was an Emirati LNG carrier with a cargo bound for India, its third transit since the war began.

Three LNG tankers have been attacked in the waterway in the past month, two of them Qatari and one Greek. Traffic was stronger at Bab el-Mandeb, where 14 energy commodity carriers either entered or exited over the same period.
