Colonel Mohammad Ali Ezzati, head of the economic security police in Hormozgan province, said on Monday, 27 July 2026, that officers carrying out the anti fuel smuggling programme stopped a suspicious tanker truck during checks on transit routes on Sunday, 26 July, and on inspection found 30,000 litres of smuggled fuel.
He put the value of the consignment at 21 billion rials, based on the assessment of economic experts. One suspect was arrested in the case and referred to the judiciary for legal proceedings.
Fuel smuggling out of Iran's southern border provinces is one of the recognised channels through which subsidised oil products leave the country, and it has drawn increasing policy attention in recent months as petrol consumption has risen and the daily supply shortfall has widened.
