Qatari and Saudi foreign ministers hold phone call; Doha stresses guaranteeing freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz

27 July 2026 | 3 months ago

Faisal bin Farhan bin Abdullah Al Saud, Saudi Arabia's foreign minister, discussed bilateral relations and the latest regional developments, in particular diplomatic efforts and joint coordination to reduce tensions, in a telephone call with Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani, Qatar's prime minister and foreign minister. The call was reported by Qatar's official news agency QNA and carried by IRNA on Monday, 27 July 2026 (5 Mordad 1405).

According to that report, Qatar's prime minister and foreign minister stressed the need for all parties to adhere to dialogue and diplomacy and to implement the agreements reached under the memorandum of understanding between the United States and the Islamic Republic of Iran, citing among them a guarantee of freedom of maritime navigation in the Strait of Hormuz. He also expressed Doha's full support for efforts to reach a comprehensive agreement.

The remarks were published on a day when Esmail Baghaei, spokesman for Iran's foreign ministry, had said the Strait of Hormuz remains closed and that talks with Oman are continuing on a bilateral basis. Sahmino does not independently confirm the existence or contents of the memorandum referred to, and reports that statement as attributed to the Qatari account. The status of traffic through the Strait of Hormuz is the single most important variable bearing on world oil prices and on Iran's currency market.
