Alexey Likhachev, CEO of Russia's state nuclear company Rosatom, said in remarks carried by RIA Novosti on Tuesday, September 8, 2026 (17 Shahrivar 1405), and reported by Ecoiran citing ISNA, that Iran wants to build new nuclear power units with Russian participation. Asked whether new units could be built in Iran, Likhachev said they certainly have that desire. Iran and Russia signed a 25 billion dollar agreement in late September 2025 to build four new power units at the Hormuz nuclear plant in Hormozgan province, along with a memorandum on cooperation on small nuclear power plants. Iran currently has one operating nuclear plant, at Bushehr, where Rosatom is also building two additional units. Likhachev said the number of Russian specialists at Bushehr, which had been reduced after the US and Israeli attack on Iran, has now reached 25, and he had previously said it would rise to 100 by autumn.
